What Are ChatGPT Ads and Should Your Business Run Them?

9 min read

ChatGPT ads are sponsored placements that appear alongside ChatGPT’s responses for people using the free and Go tiers of the product. OpenAI began testing them in early 2026 and opened self-serve access in beta in May 2026.

I run a small marketing practice, and I am writing this from inside the platform, not from press coverage. I have installed OpenAI’s conversion pixel on two websites, wired lead conversion tracking into real forms, built a campaign for a B2B software client, and launched a test campaign for my own business on July 27, 2026. This is what I know so far, what is verified fact about the platform, and an honest answer to the question in the title.

What are ChatGPT ads?

When someone on ChatGPT’s free tier or its lower-cost Go tier asks a question, an ad can appear with the response. The ad sits in a clearly labeled sponsored unit, visually separate from the answer itself. It carries a business name, a headline, a description, and an image.

Two things matter about that placement. First, the ad is not woven into the answer. OpenAI states that ads do not change what ChatGPT says, and the sponsored unit rides alongside the conversation rather than inside it. Second, the ad shows up at the moment someone is actively working through a problem. That is a different moment than scrolling a social feed, and arguably a better one.

Who does not see ads: subscribers on Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise plans. OpenAI also excludes users under 18 and conversations it classifies as sensitive. That still leaves the bulk of ChatGPT’s audience, because most people use the product without paying for the higher tiers.

How did we get here?

OpenAI spent years publicly reluctant about advertising. Then it moved fast. Testing began in early 2026 with sponsored placements for US users, running as a focused pilot through the spring. Self-serve onboarding in Ads Manager Beta followed, starting with US businesses, and OpenAI has been widening access gradually since. The practical meaning for a business owner: as of July 2026, you no longer need an enterprise budget or an invitation to run ads in ChatGPT. You need an account, a campaign, and a way to measure results.

How does targeting work?

This is the part that surprised me most when I built my first campaign. There is no keyword auction. You do not bid on “plumber near me” or “best CRM for contractors.”

Instead, targeting combines two layers:

  • Geography. Country, region, metro area, down to postal codes. Familiar territory if you have run Google or Meta ads.
  • Conversational context. At the ad group level you describe, in plain language, who you want to reach. The system matches your ads to conversations where that description fits.

Writing that audience description is closer to describing your best customer to a colleague than operating a bidding dashboard. It rewards businesses that genuinely understand who they serve, and it punishes lazy targeting. When I wrote the description for my own campaign, I rewrote it three times before it stopped sounding like a category and started sounding like a person.

There are also customer-list audiences for advertisers who upload their own first-party data, though the minimum matched-list sizes are large enough that this is mostly a tool for bigger databases.

What do ChatGPT ads cost?

The platform supports cost-per-click, cost-per-impression, and cost-per-conversion bidding. As of July 2026, campaigns require a minimum daily budget of $25, and you control total spend with your own caps.

What I will not do is quote you an average cost per click or a benchmark cost per lead, because that data does not meaningfully exist yet. The platform opened to all advertisers weeks ago. Anyone publishing “average ChatGPT ads CPC” numbers right now is working from a sample measured in days, or making it up. Treat those articles the way you would treat a restaurant review written before the kitchen opened.

What I learned actually setting them up

Reading about a platform and operating in it are different things. Here is what the setup actually involved, from my own accounts.

The conversion pixel comes first

OpenAI provides a conversion pixel: a small script that loads from OpenAI’s servers and initializes with your account’s pixel ID. I installed it on two sites, including the one you are reading. The pixel has a debug mode that prints events to the browser console, so you can watch each event fire while you test. I left debug on for launch week, watched the events land, and verified the setup end to end before spending anything.

The pixel alone is not enough. You also wire conversion events for the actions that matter. On this site, a lead form submission fires a “lead created” event to OpenAI alongside the same event our other analytics receive. That means every form fill traces back to the campaign that produced it, from the first dollar.

Campaign setup is genuinely self-serve

The flow is what you would expect if you have used other ad platforms: set a budget and a goal, build your creative, launch, and monitor. I built a campaign for a B2B software client and then a test campaign for my own business: a $200 budget and three ad variations, launched July 27, 2026. Three variations instead of one because a test should produce learning, not just spend.

The copy has to work harder

A ChatGPT ad is compact: business name, headline, description, image. There are no sitelinks, callouts, or extensions to lean on. The headline either speaks to the conversation the person is already having or it gets ignored. Writing for this format feels less like search advertising and more like earning a referral mid-conversation.

What about results?

My campaigns are days old. I have no results worth reporting, and I will not pretend otherwise. When there is real data, I will write about it. That is the honest cost of being early: you trade proof for position.

Should your business run ChatGPT ads?

Here is the framework I use with my own clients, applied to a channel I am spending my own money on.

Run a controlled test if:

  • Your customers ask ChatGPT the questions your business answers. If you sell software, services, or expertise, they almost certainly do.
  • You have a landing page that converts and lead capture with tracking already in place. A new channel pointed at a broken page just measures the breakage faster.
  • You can put a test budget at risk without pain. This is discovery spending, and it should be sized so a total loss teaches you something instead of hurting you.
  • You want account history and category learnings before your competitors show up. Early advertisers on Google and Facebook bought customers at prices that look imaginary today. Nobody can promise that pattern repeats here, but if it does, it will favor the businesses already in the room.

Wait if:

  • You have no conversion tracking. Fix that first, on every channel, before spending anywhere new.
  • You need a guaranteed cost per lead this quarter. A weeks-old platform cannot give you a guarantee, and neither can anyone managing it for you.
  • Your follow-up leaks. If leads sit unanswered today, a new lead source will not fix that. It will fund it.

What to have in place before you spend a dollar

  1. The OpenAI conversion pixel installed and verified. Watch the events fire in debug mode before launch. Do not take the installation on faith.
  2. A defined conversion event. Decide what a conversion is for your business, a lead form, a purchase, a booked call, and wire that specific event.
  3. A landing page that can close. The ad earns the click. The page earns the lead.
  4. UTM discipline. Tag the campaign traffic so your analytics separate this channel from everything else you run.
  5. A decision rule, written down before launch. What number kills the test. What number scales it. Deciding this in advance is what separates a test from a hobby.

The bottom line

ChatGPT ads are real, live, and open to any business as of July 2026. The targeting model is built on conversation context instead of keywords, the entry budgets are within reach of a small business, and the competitive window is open precisely because most businesses have not moved yet. Nobody, including me, can show you long-term performance data, and anyone who claims they can is selling something other than results.

My position: I believe in the channel enough to spend my own money in it, and I believe in honesty enough to tell you it is a test, not a sure thing. If that combination matches how you like to make decisions, this is a good moment to look at it.

I manage ChatGPT ads end to end: pixel installation, conversion tracking, ad copy, and campaign management. The details are on the ChatGPT Ads management page, or you can ask me directly whether the channel fits your business.
