AI Search Tools for Contractors: What to Track Before You Buy
A homeowner can research a contractor through an AI answer, Google, Maps, reviews and the company website before calling. An AI tracking dashboard can help you examine one part of that journey. It cannot, by itself, tell you how many jobs the marketing produced.
For an HVAC, plumbing, roofing or restoration owner, the buying question is practical: what would this report help you decide? Start with the information you already have. Add a subscription when it supplies something missing that your team will use.
Three kinds of data that should stay separate
- Tracked answers: a tool repeatedly submits selected questions and records the responses. Those questions are your test set, not a count of real homeowner searches.
- Observed consumer conversations: some vendors obtain real prompts from participant panels. A panel covers its participants, not every AI user.
- Estimated demand: vendors may model wider volumes from panels or other signals. Ask about the method, coverage and uncertainty before treating a number as local demand.
For example, Profound describes a combination of opted-in panels and statistical modeling. That is the vendor's stated method, not our independent validation of its accuracy. It does not give a contractor a complete census of local homeowner questions. Avoid both extremes: assuming every displayed question is synthetic, or assuming every volume is an exact platform total.
Start with the reports you already have
Google Search Console
Google's Generative AI performance report reports impressions of links to your site in AI Overviews and AI Mode. It offers page, country, device and date views. It does not give you a list of every homeowner question or an AI-specific booked-job count. If the report is absent, insufficient impressions can be one reason. An impression is not necessarily a recommendation of your business.
Bing Webmaster Tools
The AI Performance report describes citations across supported Microsoft and partner experiences, cited pages and sampled grounding queries. Grounding queries are retrieval phrases used by the system, not necessarily the words a customer typed. Citations are separate from clicks and business recommendations.
Google Analytics 4
Referral reports can identify some visits from AI services. They cannot see a homeowner who reads an answer and calls without visiting. Consent choices, blockers and missing referrers also limit coverage. Zero recorded referrals does not establish zero AI influence. Keep phone-link clicks separate from completed calls, form captures and booked jobs.
Compare price, coverage and what you will do with it
The public prices and feature descriptions below were reviewed on October 30, 2026. They are vendor-listed entry points, not quotes. Taxes, additional locations, usage and add-ons can change the total. Follow the linked pricing page before purchasing. We have not hands-on tested every product.
| Tool | Price and billing | Coverage and decision points |
|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29/month, monthly billing | 15 prompts, daily tracking; four included engines. Other engines can require add-ons. |
| Peec AI | $95/month, Starter | 50 prompts, three active models, one project and daily tracking. Compare the included model choices with the questions you need to track. |
| AIclicks | $59/month, Starter | 30 tracked prompts, one website and three selected models. Check country and response allowances. |
| Knowatoa | $59/month, Starter | Entry coverage lists ChatGPT, AI Overviews and AI Mode; other services are on higher tiers. |
| LLMrefs | $79/month, promotional offer | Keyword-oriented tracking with generated prompt coverage. Confirm how keyword groups and responses are counted. |
| Writesonic | $79/month equivalent, billed annually | Starter combines AI tracking, writing and audits. Check the tracked-answer allowance, not just the number of model logos. |
| AthenaHQ | $295/month, Starter | Credit-based response allowance and source analysis. API and additional credits can cost extra. |
| Scrunch | $300/month monthly, or $250/month billed annually | Starter includes prompt monitoring and page audits. The annual-equivalent price requires an annual commitment. |
| Profound | Seven-day trial; Enterprise is custom | The current public page offers a trial and tailored packages. Do not assume older quoted Starter prices remain available. |
| Local Falcon | $24.99/month, Starter | 7,500 monthly credits. Google Maps geo-grid scans and AI visibility are different report types; check credit use for the work you plan. |
| BrightLocal | $31/month equivalent, $369 billed annually for Track | Local AI tracking is included for active locations on the new platform. Track also includes local rank and geo-grid features; compare the allowances before adding another tool. |
Check an existing SEO subscription before adding another
Semrush, Ahrefs, Surfer, Search Atlas and SE Ranking also offer AI-related measurement. Their entry plans and AI allowances differ. A suite subscription does not mean every engine, location or custom prompt is included. Ask your existing provider to demonstrate the report and its allowance first.
Rankscale, Goodie and Local Dominator are additional candidates to investigate. We have left out a price or rating where this review did not establish a current comparison. A missing verified price is not evidence a product is unavailable.
BrightLocal or a dedicated prompt tracker?
If you already use BrightLocal for local reporting, its included AI visibility feature deserves a look before you buy a second subscription. Its setup supports up to 20 prompts with weekly, monthly or on-demand scheduling. It is available for active locations on the new platform.
That overlaps with a dedicated prompt tracker, but it is not an identical package. Peec Starter, for example, lists 50 prompts, three active models and daily collection. Compare engines, prompt control, country and location handling, response history, exports and frequency. A tool can include a city name in a prompt without reproducing a homeowner's precise location.
Local Falcon is useful when a geographic view of Maps performance answers a separate question, such as where a plumbing company appears across its actual service area. A Maps geo-grid is not a map of every AI recommendation. If your current platform already provides the grid you need, another subscription may duplicate it.
What I would ask before paying
- Can our current reports answer the question already?
- Does this plan cover our services, locations and the AI products we want to observe?
- How are prompts, runs, credits, mentions and unanswered questions counted?
- Can we inspect the actual answers and sources behind the score?
- Who will turn the findings into a correction, and when will we check it?
A star rating can describe reviewers' experiences with a product. It does not prove that a tool will generate contractor inquiries. We have omitted a star-rating leaderboard rather than imply a hands-on performance comparison we did not run.
Questions owners ask
Do I need a paid tool?
Not to begin. Set up the free reports, check a documented question set and identify what is missing. Pay for repeatable collection or analysis when the additional information supports a decision.
What if I am mentioned but calls do not increase?
First check whether the tracked questions match customers you want to reach, whether the answer recommends you, and what your measurement misses. Then inspect contact paths and call handling. A mention alone does not identify a conversion problem.
Can I compare two locations?
Yes, if you hold the service, prompt structure, product and reporting window consistent. Check whether the plan supports the additional location. Do not combine the results into a universal AI rank.
Next: set up a measurement routine and turn the reports into an action plan.
