How Contractors Can Use GEO Reports to Choose Their Next Action

7 min read

An AI report says your business was mentioned. A search report shows more impressions. Your office says the phone is quiet. Those observations can all be true. The job is to understand what each report measures and choose a useful next step.

This guide is for home-service owners and the managers responsible for marketing. It follows our comparison of AI search tools. The goal here is a repeatable review you can use with your team or agency, without turning a visibility score into an unsupported sales claim.

1. Give each report a defined job

Google Search Console: visibility in Google

  1. Add your site at Search Console. A Domain property covers its protocols and subdomains and requires DNS verification. Have the person responsible for your domain complete the verification if necessary.
  2. Submit the correct sitemap and confirm relevant service pages are accessible and eligible for indexing. Submitting a sitemap does not guarantee indexing.
  3. Review organic search performance separately from the Generative AI performance report. The latter shows link impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by dimensions such as page, country and device.

If the AI report is missing, do not label the site invisible. Google identifies insufficient impressions as one possible reason. The report measures neither all AI services nor the number of inquiries attributable to an AI answer.

Bing Webmaster Tools: citation activity

Add your site in Bing Webmaster Tools. An authorized import from Search Console can help with setup; review the requested access and verify the imported property. Its AI Performance report covers supported Microsoft and partner experiences. Review the cited pages and sampled grounding queries, which are retrieval phrases rather than a complete list of customer prompts.

GA4: identifiable website visits and actions

In Traffic acquisition, inspect session source or source/medium for AI referral domains such as chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and claude.ai. Microsoft sources can appear under several domains. The exact menu depends on the reports configured in your property. When examining multiple sources, use an appropriate comparison or filter rather than assuming a search box combines them with an OR condition.

Document what the implementation can miss: absent referrers, app behavior, blockers, consent choices and people who call without visiting. An accepted-visitor analytics sample is not all visitors. Do not bypass a visitor's refusal to make the report look complete.

2. Build a question set around customers you want

Start with questions from your office, estimates and service conversations. A starting set of 10 to 15 can make a review manageable, but it is a research design choice, not an estimate of total search demand. Select products and locations your plan actually supports.

  • Unbranded discovery: who repairs tankless water heaters in your service area?
  • Service and urgency: which local companies offer the emergency coverage you actually provide?
  • Evaluation: what should a homeowner ask before replacing an older AC system?
  • Branded recognition: what does the answer say about your company when asked by name?

Keep branded recognition and unbranded recommendations in separate groups. A business that appears when named in the question has not necessarily won a place on a homeowner's shortlist. Cost or repair questions can be useful even when the correct answer does not recommend a contractor.

Record the exact prompt, product/model where available, configured geography, collection schedule and date range. Keep these consistent for a comparison. If you change the wording, tag it as a new test rather than treating the change as business improvement.

3. Read the answer behind the score

A mention means the name appeared. A recommendation means the answer presented the company as an option for the task. A citation means a page was linked or attributed. One answer can contain all three, just one, or none.

Ask how a platform calculates mention rate: across distinct prompts, repeated runs or another denominator? How does it handle a missing response or a search that did not produce an AI Overview? Report the definition alongside the percentage. If an answer does not contain a ranked list, do not manufacture a first-place ranking.

Use the collection schedule available in your plan. Daily runs can show variability; weekly or monthly observations supply fewer samples. Review the trend and the answer text, rather than calling a one-run movement a result of your last edit.

4. Turn one finding into one testable action

Illustrative example, not a client result: a plumbing company appears for its name but is missing from several tankless-repair recommendation responses. One response cites a directory with an outdated service list. The company confirms it actually performs that work.

  1. Save the answer, prompt, date and linked source.
  2. Verify what the directory says and whether the business can claim or correct it.
  3. Assign the correction to a named owner and set a completion date.
  4. Improve the corresponding service page with genuine scope, service area and relevant job evidence.
  5. Repeat the same observations later and note whether the outdated description remains.

The correction is justified because customers need accurate information. If later answers change, report that observation. It does not isolate whether the directory edit, service page, another source or a model change caused it.

5. Connect visibility to the office numbers

Keep each measurement stage identifiable
StageEvidenceWhat it does not prove
VisibilityDefined prompt responses, impressions or citationsThat a local homeowner saw the answer
Website actionIdentifiable visit, phone-link click or captured formThat a call connected or an inquiry qualified
Inquiry handlingMain phone logs, form records and answering-system recordsThat every inquiry booked
Booked outcomeBooking record matched to the inquiryThat a platform alone caused the booking

If an AI receptionist handles only overflow, its logs do not show every call the owner answered first. Match records from the main phone provider, answering system and booking process, and deduplicate forwarded calls. This is how you investigate a reported slowdown without assuming that impressions explain it.

A monthly review with a decision at the end

  • Compare equivalent reporting windows and note seasonality, collection changes and missing data.
  • Review the discovery group separately from branded questions.
  • Inspect a few consequential answers and the cited pages directly.
  • Review inquiries and bookings where records support them.
  • Choose the next correction, assign an owner and record what would count as completion.

Useful reporting ends with a decision: correct a listing, document a service better, repair a contact path, investigate call handling or keep observing because the evidence is insufficient. It need not end with another subscription.

Questions owners ask

Why does my tracker disagree with my own ChatGPT session?

Wording, conversation context, location, product and timing can change responses. Compare the conditions and inspect both answers. Neither is automatically a universal result for all homeowners.

How long should we wait?

Use a documented follow-up date appropriate to the correction and the report's collection schedule. There is no guaranteed update period or ranking lift. Check whether the information itself is corrected before drawing conclusions from a score.
